The objective of the project was to extend the electricity network which was already partially in place, to the rest of the village. This extension, is now enabling every villager to request Senelec (the Senegalese electricity provider) for a connection to the electricity network. Approximately 900 metres of cables spread over about 20 wooden posts (ordered & deliverd for this purpose) were installed in the village and are now completing the low tension electricity network.
With the electricity network completed, an electric pump was installed at the bottom of the village water well at a depth of 60 metres. This pump supplies the villagers not only with drinking water, but also allows them to irrigate their kitchen gardens.
On top of this, a fridge situated in the neighbouring health advice centre was equipped with a ups (uninterruptible power supply) protecting it from power surges from the electricity network and enabling it to continue working during power cuts. This is of utter importance as this fridge contains life saving serums & vaccins and the power cuts are often and sometimes quite long.
The completion of the village’s electricity network has other advantages as well. As of now, small or large(r) entrepreneurs can start up a (little) business, thus creating work, especially for the younger generation, who in turn can earn a living. There are sewing workshops, mills, cabinetmakers, but also scrap dealers, vulcanisation shops, hair salons (especially for the young girls).
